Canvas Wall Art: 20x10, 48x24 or 60x30?

How to pick a canvas size for the wall: the sofa rule, the height rule, and what each of our gallery-wrapped sizes costs, from $69.99 to $399.99.

Lotus leaf abstract canvas wall art above a sofa

Nearly every canvas we sell comes in three sizes, and the size is the decision. The image is the easy part — you already know which one you like. What goes wrong is a 20-by-10 arriving for a wall that needed a 48-by-24, sitting above the sofa like a postage stamp.

Here is how to pick the size from the wall, not from the screen.

The sizes and what they cost

Our canvases are premium gallery wrapped: the canvas is stretched around a wooden frame and finished round the edges, so there is no separate picture frame to buy and it hangs as it arrives. The standard three sizes on most listings:

Size Listed as Price
20" x 10" Medium $69.99 – $79.99
48" x 24" Large $169.99 – $179.99
60" x 30" Extra Large $399.99

Some designs add in-between sizes — 18" x 12" at $69.99, 24" x 16" at $89.99, 36" x 24" at $119.99 — and a few come in portrait orientation, 24" x 48" at $169.99. Check the size dropdown on the listing; it is the authoritative list for that design.

Note the jump: the 48 x 24 is roughly two and a half times the price of the 20 x 10, and the 60 x 30 is more than double the 48 x 24. Size is the whole cost.

Rule one: the sofa rule

General rule: art above a piece of furniture should be about two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width. Narrower than that and it looks lost; wider and it looks like it is about to fall on you.

Work it out from your sofa:

  • 84-inch sofa → art 56 to 63 inches wide → the 60 x 30 is the fit. The 48 x 24 works if you add a lamp or a plant at one end to fill the balance.
  • 72-inch sofa → 48 to 54 inches → the 48 x 24 is right on.
  • 60-inch loveseat → 40 to 45 inches → the 36 x 24 if the design has it, or a 48 x 24 hung slightly high and centred. The 24 x 16 is too small here on its own.
  • Console table, 48 inches → 32 to 36 inches → 36 x 24 or 24 x 16.

The 20 x 10 is not a sofa canvas. It is a shelf canvas, a hallway canvas, a small-wall-beside-the-door canvas, or one of a group. On its own above seating, it will look like a mistake regardless of the image.

Rule two: the height rule

General rule: the centre of the canvas sits about 57 inches from the floor. That is the average eye height and the convention galleries use. On a tall wall with nothing under it, use it as-is.

Above furniture the rule changes: leave 6 to 8 inches between the top of the sofa back or headboard and the bottom of the canvas. Any more and the art detaches from the furniture; any less and it looks jammed.

Those two rules can conflict on a low sofa. When they do, the furniture rule wins — art relates to what is under it.

Rule three: the wall itself

Measure the wall before you measure the sofa. A 48 x 24 needs a wall at least five feet wide to breathe, and it should not run closer than about six inches to a door frame, a window, or a corner. If the wall is narrow and tall, that is what the portrait 24 x 48 is for.

For a bed, the same two-thirds rule applies to the headboard width, not the mattress: a 64-inch queen headboard wants art around 42 to 48 inches wide.

Hanging it

Gallery-wrapped canvases are light for their size. The listing says they arrive ready to hang, so the job is one or two hooks in the wall at the height above and a level. For the 60 x 30, use two hooks a couple of feet apart rather than one — not for the weight, but because a single hook lets a wide canvas tilt every time a door closes.

Personalised signs: read this before you order

A number of our canvases are personalised — family names, dates, a place name printed into the design. They are made to your text and they are custom products, which means they are not returnable under our refund policy. Check the spelling, check the date, check the size against the wall using the rules above, and then order. We would much rather you email first than find out after.

Non-personalised canvases have the standard 14-day return window from receipt, in original condition and packaging.

Delivery

Canvases ship from the maker, not from us, and delivery estimates show at checkout. They are estimates. Our shipping policy explains the whole process — the short version is that a canvas travels by parcel, so it is one of the simpler things we sell to receive.

The two-minute version

  1. Measure the furniture width. Multiply by 0.67 and 0.75. That is your range.
  2. Pick the listed size inside the range. If nothing is, go one size up, not down.
  3. Centre at 57 inches, or 6 to 8 inches above the furniture — furniture wins.
  4. Personalised means custom means not returnable. Check the text twice.

Send sales@stationhomedesign.sbs the furniture width and the design you like, and we will tell you which size to order.
