Table Lamp Height, Matched to the Table
A 13-inch lamp and a 35-inch lamp are for different tables. The seated-eye-level rule, the nightstand rule, and which of our lamps fit each, from $59.

Our table lamps run from 13 inches tall to 35. That is not a range of styles; it is a range of jobs. A 13-inch lamp on a 30-inch console vanishes. A 35-inch lamp on a 22-inch nightstand puts the bulb in your eye every time you turn over. The height is the first thing to get right, and it is decided by the table, not by the lamp.
The one rule
General rule: when you are sitting next to the lamp, the bottom of the shade should be at about your eye level — a little below is fine, above is not. Below eye level you see the glow; above it you see the bulb.
Seated eye level for most adults on a sofa or in bed is roughly 38 to 42 inches from the floor. So the sum that matters is:
table height + lamp height ≈ 58 to 64 inches to the top of the lamp
That puts the shade's lower edge in the right band for most lamp shapes. It is a rule of thumb, not a law — a lamp with a tall narrow shade or a wide short one shifts it a few inches — but it gets you to the right size before you order.
Work it backwards from the table
Measure the table, subtract from 58–64, and that is the lamp height you want.
| Table | Typical height | Lamp height wanted | From our range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nightstand | 24–28" | 26–34" | Evangelista 26", Sciotodale 26", Parrsboro 26", Tinoto 30", Shackelford 31", Tuka 31" |
| End table by a sofa | 22–26" | 30–36" | Tinoto 30", Shackelford 31", Tuka 31", Vegreville 34", Yardville 35" |
| Console or sideboard | 30–34" | 24–30" | Shaunavon 24", Evangelista 26", Sciotodale 26", Parrsboro 26", Tinoto 30" |
| Desk | 29–30" | 20–26" | Standerton 21", Shaunavon 24", Parrsboro 26" |
| Shelf, mantel, windowsill | varies | 13–21" | Logale 13", Umaganhan 17", Standerton 21" |
The two shortest lamps — the Logale at 13 inches ($69) and the Umaganhan at 17 inches ($59) — are shelf and accent lamps. They are not reading lamps and they are not nightstand lamps; put them on a bookshelf, a kitchen counter or a deep windowsill where a taller lamp would crowd the space.
Nightstands: the extra rule
Beside a bed, the lamp height also has to work with the mattress top. If the bottom of the shade is below the mattress, you are reading in shadow. The practical check: lamp top should be roughly level with, or a few inches above, your head when you are sitting up against the headboard.
For a standard mattress top around 25 inches and a 26-inch nightstand, a 26- to 31-inch lamp lands right. The Parrsboro at 26 inches ($129) and the Shackelford at 31 inches ($239) bracket that range; the Shackelford is the choice for a tall headboard or a thick mattress.
Buy nightstand lamps in pairs and buy them at the same time — matching a clearance lamp six months later rarely works, and several of these are on clearance now.
Width matters too
A lamp base is listed with its width — the Yardville is 35"H x 18"W, the Standerton 21"H x 10"W. General rule: the shade should not overhang the table's edge, and the base should leave room for whatever else lives on the table. A 16- to 18-inch shade on a 20-inch nightstand leaves no room for a book or a glass; the 10- to 14-inch bases are the nightstand sizes.
Sofa end tables: the pair question
Two end tables with two matching lamps is the classic; one lamp and a plant on the other side is fine too. What does not work is two lamps of different heights flanking one sofa. If the tables are different heights, use the rule above to pick two lamps that put the shade bottoms at the same level — a 26-inch lamp on a 26-inch table and a 30-inch lamp on a 22-inch table both top out at 52, and read as a pair.
Bulbs and cords
The listing tells you the socket type and the maximum wattage; stay inside it. Warm white bulbs (around 2700K) suit every lamp here. And check where the outlet is before choosing the table — a lamp cord across a walkway is the thing nobody photographs and everybody trips on.
Before you order
- Measure the table height. Subtract from 58–64. That is your lamp height.
- Shelf lamps are 13–21"; nightstand lamps 26–31"; sofa-side lamps 30–35".
- Match pairs now, not later.
- Clearance lamps are final sale; the rest have the 14-day return window in original condition and packaging.
- Lamps ship parcel from the maker; delivery estimates are at checkout — our shipping policy explains.
Send sales@stationhomedesign.sbs the table height and the lamp you like, and we will tell you whether it is the right height for the job.
